ABOUT SIRINCE

This pretty old Orthodox village, 12 km away from Ephesus and 30 km from Kusadasi The located on the top of a mountain, anyone will enjoy the impressive wine yards' and peach trees' views on his way, a perfect synthesis of Turk-Greek culture as of the 1920's houses, and a nicely restorated Orthodox church. Located on a hillside surrounded by apple and grape orchards is the neighboring village of Sirince. Originally settled by Greeks, the village was inhabited by the Ephesian Christians, who, displaced during the Selçuk conquests, moved up into the surrounding hills. The village has an interesting history, the site having been settled by early Christians from Ephesus, and there are the remains of early monasteries in the area. Local myth has it that the Virgin Mary is buried here, and there is a historical link to the 1st century site now called Mary's House near Ephesus where the Virgin is believed to have lived after the death of Christ. .

This pretty village called once Cirkince ("ugly"). Indeed its habitants gave this name on purpose as they did not want to be bothered by foreigners nor to share the beauty of their village. Still after years, visitors understood that the village was not ugly at all and called it Sirince ("pretty"). In the Greek exchanges of 1924, Muslims from Salonica resettled here, creating a farming community highly adept at winemaking. Village of Sirince, known for its traditional 19th-century village houses, some of which have been converted into guest-houses. Wine is produced in this small hillside Turkish village, which itself resembles an open-air museum. The village is under a conservation order to retain the authentic houses remaining after the Rums departed for Greece in 1924.

As the village is located on the top of a mountain, anyone will enjoy the impressive wine yards' and peach trees' views on his way. *One warning however: if you're a true judge of wine, you'll probably think wine should be made from grapes. So, don't try the wines of Sirinçe by blind choice. Here they also make wine of cherries, strawberries, green apple, melon, blueberries, and mulberries. And all other kinds of fruits.
